Although updating to the current rpm version
as suggested in:

http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2004-501.html

utilizing `rpm` still deadlocks and spams in strace:

Will re-setup this server asap - stay tuned.

2005-01-21 - server brought down for reinstallation

2005-03-01 - server back online... but still no success doing rpm operations.
             I've applied all patches available via up2date but still got the
             errormessages as cited above...

2005-03-21 - looks like I've won the battle (and thus managed to resurrect our
             RHEL3 buildserver)- using an alternative method to fix the issue described
             above (my precious).
